04IT & security

Backup & data protection.

NAS, cloud backup, offsite copy and disaster recovery, tested regularly. A backup only counts once the restore has worked.

Starting point

Data loss has many causes

A failed hard disk, ransomware, an accidentally deleted folder, fire or theft. The question is not whether one of these happens, but whether you can keep working afterwards.

The 3-2-1 rule

Three copies, two media, one offsite

Three copies of your data, on two different media, one of them outside the office. That covers every scenario mentioned, including ransomware, because one copy is disconnected from the network.

Services

Individual backup concepts

NAS solutions

Local backup hub in the office: fast restore, and the data stays with you.

Synology & QNAP·RAID·Snapshots against ransomware

Cloud backup

Automatic, encrypted backup to the cloud, restorable from anywhere.

Veeam / Acronis·Azure / Backblaze B2·End-to-end encryption

Offsite backup

A physical copy outside the office, safe from fire, theft and water damage.

Drive rotation·Automated transfer·Encrypted transfer

Server backup

Windows and Linux servers backed up completely, so that a server can be restored on new hardware within hours.

Full & incremental·Versioning·VMware / Hyper-V

Microsoft 365 backup

Microsoft keeps deleted data only for a limited time. Exchange, SharePoint, Teams and OneDrive backed up permanently and independently.

Exchange Online·SharePoint & OneDrive·Point-in-time restore

Disaster recovery

A documented recovery plan, tested regularly.

In practice

What matters

Fast recovery

With a current, tested backup a business is back at work within hours after an attack. Without a backup it takes weeks, if it works at all.

Regular tests

I regularly restore individual files and whole systems as a test and document the result.

Part of compliance

Swiss and EU data protection law require the protection of personal data. A working backup is part of that.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why is a NAS alone not enough?
A NAS in the same office protects against a failed hard disk, but neither against ransomware nor against fire, theft or water damage. That is why there is always an additional cloud or offsite copy.
How often should backups run?
For most SMEs: daily backups, for critical systems hourly incremental snapshots. Microsoft 365 and other cloud services need their own backup too.
What is disaster recovery?
The complete restoration of IT after a serious event, following a documented plan: what is restored when and how, and how long may the outage last?
Are backups tested?
Untested backups are worthless. I carry out regular restore tests and document the results. Only then do you know that it works in an emergency.
